About us
No two organisations face exactly the same safeguarding risks. Our work starts with understanding yours.
We look at what your organisation does, who it works with, where risks may arise and how existing systems work in practice. We identify gaps and needs, then develop practical, proportionate solutions around what we find.
That may mean strengthening a safeguarding system, developing policies or procedures, designing training for particular teams or contexts, improving reporting and response mechanisms, or providing specialist support on a specific challenge.
Our focus
Safeguarding, gender-based violence, child protection, and protection from sexual exploitation, abuse and sexual harassment, and related areas of protection. We take an integrated approach, connecting prevention, risk mitigation and response rather than treating them as separate areas of work.
Who we work with
We work with organisations that want to prevent harm and strengthen the way they safeguard the people they employ, work with and serve.
Our clients and partners may include international organisations, NGOs and civil society, governments and public institutions, schools and universities, foundations, companies, and others with a responsibility to prevent and respond to harm.
Our ethos
There is an old Greek word — epimeleia — that appears in Plato’s Republic. It means something close to a moral obligation to actively care for and cultivate the wellbeing of the soul, both your own and others’. It’s not passive. It’s not reactive. It’s a practice — something you do daily, deliberately, and with discipline.
That idea is at the heart of what we do.
We believe safeguarding works in much the same way. It cannot exist only in policies, procedures or systems that are activated when something goes wrong. It has to be cultivated: in how people think, how organisations work, how risks are identified and addressed and how organisations respond when harm occurs.
We bring practitioner-led expertise in safeguarding, gender-based violence (GBV), child protection and PSEAH to help organisations build that practice into the way they work.
We cultivate people and systems that are incapable of ignoring harm.
What this means in practice
Our ethos shapes how we approach every engagement.
We look beyond compliance.
Policies matter, but we look at whether safeguarding actually works in practice: how risks are recognised, how people behave, whether concerns can be raised safely and what happens when they are.
We start with context, not a template.
Every organisation is different. We look at its work, people, operating environment and particular risks before recommending what needs to change.
We keep those affected by harm at the centre.
Prevention and response should ultimately be judged by whether they make people safer and whether those who experience harm can access support they can trust.
We build around real risks and needs.
Whether we are strengthening systems, developing training or advising on response, the solution is shaped by what we find, not by a one-size-fits-all model.
We work with people, not just systems.
Lasting safeguarding depends on the people who lead, manage and use those systems. We therefore focus on building understanding and capability alongside policies and processes.
How we work
Our work is tailored to the organisation and the problem it is trying to solve. While every engagement is different, our approach follows four broad steps:
Understand
We start by understanding the organisation: what it does, who it works with, where power sits, its operating environment and the particular safeguarding challenges it faces.
Assess
We look at risks, needs, strengths and gaps. This can include how existing policies, systems and practices operate in reality, not only how they are designed on paper.
Design
We use what we find to develop practical, proportionate solutions. That might mean strengthening policies or procedures, designing tailored training, improving reporting and response mechanisms, building staff capacity or addressing a specific safeguarding risk.
Embed
Where possible, we work with the people who will ultimately own and use those systems, building the knowledge and capability needed for improvements to continue beyond our engagement.
Most engagements combine two or three of our services. If you are not sure what you need, describe the problem and get in touch. We can talk through your situation and how we might work together.
Practitioners first
Safeguarding Practice International is practitioner-led. Every engagement is led by a named senior practitioner who remains your point of contact throughout. Where a project needs additional technical depth, we bring in associates from a network of practitioners with a proven track record in the relevant area, named and agreed with you before they start.
We are practitioners first and foremost. We have managed the cases, facilitated the community sessions, built the databases, written the SOPs, trained the focal points and sat in the coordination meetings. We advise from experience, but we also know that no two organisations or contexts are the same. We listen first, ask questions and work with the people who know their context best to find solutions that are practical, proportionate and fit for purpose.
Let’s work together.
Whether you’re starting from scratch or strengthening what you already have, we’re ready to help.
